Ronald McDonald House Quilt Part 2

Here is the completed section of the Ronald McDonald House quilt that utilized the Monkey Business pattern from Kim Brackett's book Scrap-Basket Surprises 18 Quilts from 2.5" Strips.

On the lower left corner of this twin size quilt the M is a tribute to the donations made by the customers of the McDonald's Restaurants. The idea of a parabola and its axis of symmetry was all that was needed to create the M.

Look for more about the Ronald McDonald House Quilt in future blogs. What is your favorite charity?

Sewing a Ronald McDonald House Charity Quilt

I had a friend at college who was living a nightmare. My friend and his wife were marking time as their precious little child was suffering with Leukemia. They stayed at the Ronald McDonald House during the frequent medical trips. The home offered them comfort and togetherness as the rest of the world continued on unaware of the precious breath by breath moments slipping away.

As you deposit those small amounts of change into the collection stands in your favorite McDonald's restaurants know your generosity offers an oasis to families in the darkest of times. Take some time to visit the Ronald McDonald's House Charities Website to find out more about this much needed and appreciate program.

This quilt will be donated to the charity upon completion.

For the top of the quilt I am using a pattern from Scrap-Basket Surprises 18 Quilts from 2.5" Strips by Kim Brackett published by Martingale and Company. All of Kim's patterns in the book are exciting but I have selected Monkey Business on page 64 for this project. The quilt illustrated in the book measures 53.5"x65.5". I will be making a twin size quilt so changes to the pattern will include the increased width. The Ronald McDonald House Charity twin quilt will measure 65"x88". Take the time to read Kim's Basic Quiltmaking Instructions beginning on page 12. Her techniques and tips are well written and illustrated.

I bought my copy of the book from Hueffmeir's Fine Pines Quilt Shop located in Brookfield, MO 660-258-3244. Purchase a copy so you can sew along.

I selected Kona solid colors black and white with a touch of yellow (not included on the top part of the quilt). The fabric was purchased at Missouri Star Quilt Company located in Hamilton, MO 888-571-1122.

Brackett's instructions are easy to follow and clearly written.

More on the quilt in later posts. Thank you for considering the Ronald McDonald House Charities when making your charity quilts or depositing change at your local restaurant.

Pink Chalk Fabric Surprise

Pink Chalk Fabrics included a wonderful card in a recent order to a member. The card gives the mattress sizes and suggested quilt sizes for a variety of quilt types. Its fun to do business with companies that include nice little surprises. The member ordered the Quick Curve Ruler and a downloadable pdf pattern by Sew Kind of Wonderful and the pattern Northern Lights by Jaybird Quilts. The order arrived as expected and in the time frame expected. This was the first time the member placed an ordered with Pink Chalk Fabric.

What surprises have you received from fabric companies that make you want to do business with them again?

Binding Part 1

One of our members shares thier binding practices. Pinning and markings are optional.

Horizontal Cut Binding
The binding is horizontal strips cut 2.5 inches wide.
The binding strip length needs to measure the perimeter of the quilt plus about 10 inches.
If the perimeter of your project is greater than the width of your fabric, from which you are cutting your binding, you will need to join multiple strips together.

A quick vocabulary lesson.
The right side of fabric refers to the front of the fabric. The wrong side of fabric refers to the back of the fabric.

Joining Binding Strips
To join strips place fabric strip ends right (front) sides together, at 90 degrees as seen in the photo below. Solid color fabric is more forgiving about identifying right and wrong (back) sides, but there is a difference.
If you extend the ends slightly past each strip it is easier to follow the diagonal stitch line.
Connecting the strips at 90 degrees helps to cut down on bulk.

Sew along the diagonal line. Painters tape works well as an optional sew guide to marking. Both practices are illustrated below.

Iron the seam open before cropping as seen below.

Cut (crop) the excess fabric from the seam. Use any of your tools that have quarter inch markings to measure the seam (if you wish) as seen below. Meauring the seam is optional.

Now the fabric is sewn together. Keep joining strips until the length of the binding strip is greater than the perimeter of your quilt by about 10 inches.

Iron the binding lengthwise in half (right side of fabric to the outside).

Connect Binding to Quilt Front
Pin where you want to begin to sew. Pin the binding raw edges to the quilt's raw edge beginning about 10 inches from the end of the binding and about in the middle of the longest side of the quilt.

This ends part 1 of binding
