Saturday November 16 meeting

Twisted Stitchers,

I checked out the Library Building and it has sufficient outlets.  Although only 4 in the main area, there are 12 more in the kitchen.  So, with extension cords, we should be fine.  There are 5 -8' tables also.

I'll show demonstrate how to make a set of 8 coasters with a charm pack if anyone is interested.  Also the 15 minute table runner.

I am planning to bring taco chili for lunch.  Who else is coming?   Sandy will have the building open at 9:00.  I'll open the lower door on the East end of the south side. See you Saturday!

November 16 - Saturday Sew

Saturday, November 16  -  Mexican Buffet  9:00 to ????

If you are like me - it takes some time to find what I want in the stash so wanted to get this info to you.
Everything is a guess on my part so good luck - but I think it will work!

I THINK we are meeting at the old library which is north of the original Missouri Star location or west of the current store (behind the bank).  We probably should avoid using the bank parking lot.

Supply list for Christmas tree napkins - 2 coordinating fabrics - 2 fat quarters per napkin or 1 yard each of coordinating fabric for 4 napkins

Supply list for thread catcher - 2 coordinating fabrics - 10 -12 inch squares.

I want to make the fabric boxes making the rounds on the forum - coordinating fabric 8, 10, 12 inch squares (depending on the size of the box) and thin batting.   Buttons for embellishment.

Please feel free to correct any mis-information I am sending or reply to all with another project you want to share!!!!

Thanks and hope to see you there!

Becky

October meeting

From Carolyn

Meeting Thursday October 17 at 6:30

Quilt Retreat Center, Hamilton
Program Change
Bring a fat quarter (autumn color)  for a quick fall decorating idea.
Bring a favorite Fall Quilted item you like to decorate with for show and tell.  It can be anything from a Halloween pillow, Turkey table mat to a quilt in autumn colors.
Bring ideas for the Christmas Party and future programs.
Thanks to all for a successful social with the Lathrop and Trenton area quilt guilds.  We had 34 attending and lots of great food!  The silent auction table brought in $250 to pay for our expenses and leave excess for our treasury.  Thanks to Charlotte, Erma, Romme, Teressa, Maxine, Sue, Darlene, Daniela, Pat, Carolyn and Mary Beth for contributing items.  A special thanks to Pat for helping me set up the room early.  Everyone pitched in to help with kitchen and clean up also.

Missouri Sewing Machine Company

I went to Missouri Sewing Machine Company today for two reasons. First I have a 24 year old Baby Lock 5280E serger and am missing the pedal/plugin. In just a very few minutes and less than $40 I now have a pedal/plug in. WOW Great service. Secondly, I purchased a Janome My Lock Serger for less than I expected. In addition to all that I picked up a "Christmas In July" sales special 100 Organ Needles for only $20. The service was out standing and Mary Ann at the 3010 S 291 Hwy, Independence, MO  location is now my favorite sewing machine EXPERT. Missouri Sewing Machine Co has 4 locations in the Kansas City area. Check them out. Online at www.mosew.com  or by phone 800-257-4989.

1916 Singer Part 2

How does one oil or fix an antique sewing machine?

YouTube is rich with how-to videos.

Lizzie Lenard's "How to Clean and Oil a Vintage Sewing Machine Part 1 [ click here ] and Part 2" [ click here ] provides a great place to begin.

The first problem encountered was the pressure foot would not move up or down.
The decorative face plate is held on by one screw.

The face plate was removed.

On the left is the lever known as the pressure bar lifter. Visible in the upper middle is the spring that controls the pressure on the pressure bar. On the right is the needle bar. The pressure foot, needle, pressure foot thumb screw, and needle clamp were removed. The parts were placed in a container so they are out of the way and don't get lost. The old oil and goo were removed using singer sewing machine oil, a cloth, Q-tips, and crochet thread as demonstrated in Lizzie Lenard's YouTube video. Dripping Singer sewing machine oil was the only cleaning to the spring, no rubbing. The cleaning process was time consuming but once the mechanism let lose what a thrill of accomplishment.

1916 Singer Sewing Machine

One of our members recently acquired a beautiful 1916 Singer Sewing Machine and case. The initial owner of this machine lovingly used it then stored it, so the machine is in need of care. I'll take you along on the search to learn about this new antique.

How does one find out the age of a Singer sewing machine?

Singer's website [ click here ] is full of historical information including determining the age of a machine. You begin with the serial number. There is a small plate under the stitch regulator on the front of the machine that has the serial number stamped into it.

The plates with double letters preceding a number may date back as far as 1935. This plate has a single letter preceding the number. Single letter numbers date before 1935. This particular number is G5104207 and on the Singer web site dates to 1916.

ISMACS International Sewing Machine Collector's Society [ click here ] has a plethora of information including dating your antique sewing machines [ Singers included ]. This is the website that helped identify this machine as a model number 115.

April 13 Quarterly Saturday Workshop

From Carolyn

Just a reminder about our quarterly Saturday workshop on April 13th. We will be constructing floral log cabin blocks starting at 9AM. Maxine is bringing one of her gorgeous completed quilts and I will be bringing floral fabrics to share. If you wish to do some prep work, this pattern calls for 2" strips with a 3 1/2" center square. Here's a tip from Maxine: The light half of the block should have a white/light tones for a good contrast with the dark side. A lot of florals read medium when cut in strips and sewn in the block. Maxine will also share different patterns for setting a log cabin quilt.
Come and go as you please, bring whatever you wish for lunch and/or snacks. Here's a chance to try out the new Baby Lock machines in the classroom. The only rule is to have fun!
