December Meeting

We had a wonderful meeting last night! Several of our members attended, and I think we all had fun.

Since I have now assumed the duties of secretary, I thought that perhaps I could save myself some time and instead of typing a long description of our meeting, I could just pep up the minutes a little and put them on instead of stating what happened twice. Sounds more practical, doesn't it?

Minutes :

Call to order-

Katie, Romme, Sue, Rosemary, Pat O, Maxine, Jeannie, Pat Y, Dixie, Charlotte, and Carolyn were present.

Treasurers report- Books still not received, but Romme guessed about $xxx.xx in checking.

Romme handed out the Block of the Month

Sue showed her finished block of the month blocks made in Kansas Troubles fabrics

Community service report- The decision was made to make more quilts of valor before drawing for donation. The group Quilt of Valor is pieced. The possibility of receiving a discount for community service machine quilting from Cuts and Bolts was discussed.

Programs- Charlotte will be hosting the January program. Jeanie signed up for August and Maxine took March for 2016 programs. The only months left with no volunteers to host the programs are July and November. Katie said that she would like the volunteers of each month to email her with their programs as soon as they were sure what they would be doing. She will be making a calendar on the blog and Facebook so guild members and others could be aware of what the month's programs are ahead of time so they could coordinate their schedules.

Friday night sew in January- cancelled because of holiday

Next month's program - Charlotte B. will be hosting a workshop on a pattern called "Paper Pieced Arrows".

Meeting adjourned.

Charlotte will be posting the materials list and other specifications for her paper pieced arrow project next month. Please check here for updates.

And aside from that business meeting, we had a nice little party. We exchanged gifts and had some nice food (thanks to everyone who brought something!) and we had a lovely chat. It was a wonderful way to end this year and get ready for next year!

Lastly, before I put on the pictures, I just want to extend a very, very big thanks to everyone for everything they've done this year. We're a small (and admittedly struggling) guild, and sometimes that makes it hard to get things done, but we have exceptionally talented, kind, and hard-working members who are willing to do a lot for the guild that have made all that we have done this year possible.

A Few Quick Notes

Hello, everyone. Just got on here to publish a few quick notes.

Firstly, I want to REMIND EVERYONE OF OUR MEETING TONIGHT. We are going to have a short regular meeting and as our special monthly activity we are going to have a bit of a Christmas party, as previously stated in older posts. Bring a guest if you'd like! The more the merrier.

I also wanted to mention a possible outing for guild members. I noticed in the Chillicothe quilt shop a few days ago that they had flyers for the MQS (Machine Quilters Showchase) 2016 show in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. It is the 11th of May through the 14th. Their theme is "Threads of Time". I thought it sounded rather interesting.
Here's a link to their website in case anyone is interested:

http://www.mqsshow.org/

Just wanting to spread awareness so no one misses an opportunity to do something they might be interested in.

Hope to see you all this evening!!

November Meeting

We had our November meeting last night. We had six quilts entered into the president's challenge which was to make a quilt incorporating circles. We also elected new officers and turned in our Valor blocks.

Our plans for next month's meeting (which will be held on December 17th) include having a short meeting and then having a party. Our plans will be much the same as last year for our gift exchange; just bring something from your sewing room that you have no use for to exchange. Also, if anyone could bring food, that would be nice too. And don't forget Friday Night Sew on December 4th!

There has been an almost complete shift of officers for next year. The new officers are as follows;

Charlotte B. - Community Service

Pat Y. - Block of the Month

Romme D. - Treasurer

Katie D. - Internet Resources

Katie D. - Secretary

Becky O. - President

The decision has been made to drop the office of Program Chairman as there was no one willing to volunteer for the position (quite understandably so - it's a very difficult job). We have instead decided to adopt a new system for the new year so that there is not just one person burdened with the responsibility. Some members signed up to come up with a program for a month (though we don't yet have a full calendar, but there is plenty of time to fill it out). After we get someone signed up to manage each month of 2016, everyone will email their ideas to the secretary, who will then put it up on the blog so we all have a clear idea of what is to come, since there will be no program chairman's bulletin at the beginning of the year.

Now, regarding our President's Challenge quilts: there were six lovely quilts brought in, all with their own unique character. They were are circular in their own way.

And now for a few quilts from show and tell:

October Meeting

We had our October meeting last night.

We have made a few developments in regards to our ideas to start donating quilts to both veterans and active servicemen and servicewomen. I personally think that it is an excellent idea. The men and women in the military go through a lot just to keep home a safe place to be, and they deserve to know that everyone at home is supporting them and appreciates their service. Please think of veterans you know that you would like to show your appreciation to by presenting them with a quilt. We will enter their names in a drawing next month.

Next month is the President's Challenge. PLEASE BRING YOUR CIRCLE QUILTS TO THE NOVEMBER MEETING!!

We tentatively plan to have a party at the December meeting, plus we plan to elect new officers. Please be thinking about what office you would like to have so that we can keep the guild active. New officers will keep the guild well balanced and will bring in new ideas, so please don't be afraid to volunteer!

Here are the finished blocks for the block kits that were passed out last night. You can use these pictures to refer to for placement of fabrics.

Here is the show and tell from last night:

This is a sampler made from a pattern that Romme acquired from her Jo Morton club at Crossroads Quilting.

This is a lovely Judy Niemeyer pattern made in batiks.

The Mystery Quilt program was last night. I think everyone had fun getting started on their projects.

Quilt Show!

We had our Penney Days Quilt Show yesterday! It was a load of fun, and everything went very smoothly. The only concern that we had early on was that there wouldn't be enough quilts, but Amy and Deloris emptied their stores to make our room look less sad and more full. We had many quilts entered, each one special. We had a turnout of around 90 to 100 people walk through our display (even one couple all the way from Minnesota!) with no accidents or mishaps, I am pleased to report.

Before I list the winners, I just want to say that there was one tie in the applique category and a few great quilts that were very lovely but just didn't make the cut. All the quilts entered were deserving.

September Meeting

We had a good meeting last night! There was a good attendance, and some developments were made. Pat had a wonderful program on how to make curved seams and flawless mitering. She is a very gifted lady and she offered some expert advice to those who might find themselves struggling with a Wedding Ring pattern.

Please mark your calendars for these upcoming dates;

Next FRIDAY THE 25TH is the SET-UP DAY FOR OUR QUILT SHOW at the Federated Church of Hamilton. We will be at the church from 3pm to 8pm accepting quilts to enter in the show. Please bring as many quilts as you like (as long as they weren't winners last year at our show!). And if anyone is available to assist us in preparing the church for the show, your help will be most welcome!

Next SATURDAY THE 26TH is the DAY OF THE QUILT SHOW! We will be open from 9am-4pm. PLEASE PICK UP YOUR QUILTS AFTER THE SHOW BETWEEN 4:30pm AND 5pm! We should have the votes counted and the ribbons pinned onto the quilts by 4:30.

Also, two more (plus two tentative) important dates;

October 2nd - Friday Night Sew, Kidder

October 15th - Regular meeting in Hamilton + President's Mystery Quilt Program*

Also, Carolyn is starting to plan our outings to Brunswick, MO and Fabricquilt in Kansas City. These outings will most likely be on weekdays. Everyone is very busy, and working around the schedules of each member planning to attend and the business hours of the places we are planning to visit is going to be a difficult job. Please keep posted to your inboxes for further information from Carolyn.

*For those of you planning to participate in the Mystery Quilt Program in October and were not at the meeting last night to collect details (or if you lost your notes, or if you just need to review), these are the required materials

OCTOBER MYSTERY QUILT PROJECT
MATERIALS NEEDED:
6 1/2" STAR BLOCK OF YOUR CHOICE
4 - 1 1/4" X 9 STRIPS TO FRAME BLOCK
1 YD LIGHT
1 YD DARK
(THESE SHOULD COORDINATE WITH YOUR STAR)
28" X 28" MUSLIN
28"X 28" BACKING
28" X 28" BATTING
PREPARATIONS FOR WORKSHOP:
1.  MAKE STAR BLOCK OF YOUR CHOICE
2.  FIND CENTER OF MUSLIN BY FOLDING IN HALF, PRESS.  THEN FOLD IN HALF AGAIN AND PRESS.  YOU SHOULD HAVE A + THAT WILL HELP YOU DRAW YOUR CENTER SQUARE.
3.  DRAW A 6 3/4" SQUARE IN THE CENTER OF THE MUSLIN.  FROM THE EDGES OF THE SQUARE MEASURE AND START DRAWING LINES 3/4" APART OUT TO THE EDGES OF THE MUSLIN.  THE LINES WILL CROSS EACH OTHER AND CONTINUE TO THE EDGES.  ACCURACY IS IMPORTANT AS THESE ARE THE LINES ALONG WHICH YOU WILL PLACE AND SEW, THEN FOLD, STRIPS.
4.  LAYER BACKING (WRONG SIDE UP), THEN BATTING AND THEN MUSLIN ON TOP.  BASTE OR PIN TOGETHER.
5.  CUT 2 1/2 STRIPS FROM LIGHT AND DARK FABRICS.  YOU WILL NEED 8 - 10 STRIPS.
BRING ALL OF THIS, YOUR SEWING MACHINE AND SEWING SUPPLIES TO THE OCTOBER MEETING TO FIND OUT HOW TO CONTINUE.  A WALKING FOOT FOR YOUR SEWING MACHINE WILL BE VERY HELPFUL.

These are instructions straight from the horse's mouth (the president), so be assured that they are exact and reliable.

August Meeting

I apologize for the lateness of this post, but I would like to review Thursday's meeting.

It was a good meeting with a good attendance (welcome back, Amy!) and it was very enjoyable to see Darlene and others' holiday quilts.

Momentum is picking up in anticipation of September's quilt show with the Crazy Quilters. Deloris is getting the categories lined up and we are now shopping for ribbons to award to the winners of each category.

We have decided to have the same policy regarding help as we have in past years: Everyone is urged to help whenever they can. There will be no working shifts or stiff obligations. Also, I believe the decision has been made to not use Missouri Star's PVC pipe quilt display racks as they were a bit too tall and wide for our provided facility, and we would like to provide more space to walk and better, brighter lighting. Even though our use of the church will not be confined exclusively to the fellowship hall this year, we still are only going to have only the east-facing door open and a single reception table so we can cut down on the places that we will all have to try to be at once. This year we will be needing more monitors to walk around and keep an eye on both the quilts and church property as we will be using the sanctuary for quilt display as well as the fellowship hall. Deloris is going to be at the helm of this operation, so if you have any questions or concerns later down the line, please email her sister Bernice (she will be happy to carry the message next door to Deloris, who is experiencing some problems with her email server).

We are also trying to coordinate how to get flyers for our show to different areas of the state. Romme has already figured out ways to get ads in the Caldwell County News and the Chillicothe newspaper, but we need to get our flyers out to as many places as possible. So when the flyers are ready, we may need some of our members from different communities to cover their area. It has not been decided whether it would be possible to email the flyers to each other to be printed and distributed to different communities again because of Deloris' aforementioned email issue.

So the bottom line is, please mark your calendars for Friday, September 25th and Saturday, September 26th. We will be needing quilts to enter in the show as well as some help. Whenever you can help and in whatever way, your help will be MUCH appreciated so the weekend can be fun for all, and not a nightmare for a few.

Anyway, now that that's covered, I will discuss the fun part of our meeting; Darlene's presentation! Darlene is a lady who loves the holidays, it seems to me, as she has made more holiday quilts than most of us.
